From Baseball to Business: Dale Murphy on Joining Georgia Oak

In this exclusive interview, we sat down with Atlanta Braves legend Dale Murphy and Georgia Oak Managing Partner Mike Lonergan to discuss the reasons behind Dale Murphy's big move to Georgia Oak as Managing Director.

Video Transcript

Dale Murphy: Georgia Oak does things the right way. That's the most important thing with all our partner companies, is we want to do things the right way. We want to enhance the businesses that we're partners with, and legacy is very important, not only to the team here at Georgia Oak, but to the companies we partner with.

Mike Lonergan: We've realized we had the opportunity to plug him into what we're building here at Georgia Oak. It was just a perfect fit that he could come on board and bring his expertise and all the lessons learned to our people.

Dale: The values of Georgia Oak, I think it's really what attracted me to the possibility of being a partner with Georgia Oak. A long-term commitment to their companies, locally owned, and looking for growth opportunities to grow companies, most importantly, to grow companies in the right way.

Mike: He has a career of influence, both on and off the field of doing things the right way. We all know in the eighties and nineties, there were a bunch of others that took a different path, a path of shortcuts. And Murph to me represents that, that high road, the high level of integrity that he always brought to baseball day in, day out. But there's a lot of parallels to private equity too, in that, there are shortcuts in private equity. There's certainly ways to come into a business day one and cut costs, and you can increase profitability literally in hours. And that's the shortcut. And to us, you know, we're all about doing things the right way, the more sustainable way, growing businesses, and it's hard.

Dale: The mission statement of Georgia Oak is to do things the right way. And to that, I felt an instant connection.

Mike: To have someone like Murph join our team and help spearhead that mentorship with our portfolio companies, the managers. I think it's gonna be awesome for not just the groups, but the people that day in day out now get to call him a teammate and benefit from all that knowledge and the lessons that he can share with them.
