Leadership Perspective: Jim Bojko — The Enduring Value of Founder Experience

When Jim Bojko became CEO of Artisan Closets, he brought a strong background in consulting, business strategy, and corporate leadership.
Those experiences provided a solid foundation for leading a growing organization. But some of his most valuable insights have come from working alongside founders who spent decades building exceptional businesses.
As Artisan continues to grow its family of custom closet brands, each new partnership offers an opportunity to learn from the people who built those businesses from the ground up.
Three principles shape how he puts that founder experience to work.
1. Beyond the Textbook
Business school and consulting teach leaders how to analyze problems and evaluate options. While those frameworks work on paper, founders add a unique dimension: how to make decisions that account for the soft factors of a real business.
"Working with founders has taught me how to bridge the gap between the textbook approach and the most effective approach."
Years of building a business give founders an instinct for nuances that rarely appear in a case study. They understand customers, employees, and markets in ways only experience can teach.
For Jim, those perspectives remain invaluable. Whenever he’s navigating an important decision, he seeks counsel from a trusted group of founders.
Frameworks provide direction. Experience sharpens judgment.
2. The Best Ideas Are Shared, Not Standardized
The Artisan Family of Brands consists of five distinct sister brands that provide custom storage solutions across the Southeast.
Each founder built a successful business in a different way, developing unique approaches to serving customers, managing operations, and growing their company. Rather than seeing the diverse systems as a challenge, Jim views them as an opportunity.
"We have fantastic teams across all of our brands, each bringing decades of industry experience to the table. Identifying and dispersing best practices across our brands is one of the most exciting things for our team to solve."
Artisan focuses on sharing ideas, adapting what's proven to work, and strengthening each business while preserving what makes it unique.
Building a larger organization isn't the goal. Building a smarter one is.
3. You Can't Lead from a Conference Room
While evaluating a potential acquisition, a seasoned founder insisted they spend as much time as possible visiting stores in the field.
The result? More than 50 stores in five days.
At first, many of the visits felt repetitive. But over time, patterns began to emerge—insights that never would have surfaced in a spreadsheet or boardroom presentation.
The experience reinforced a lesson Jim deeply believes: the most meaningful insights are found where the work actually happens.
Whether evaluating an acquisition, supporting a portfolio company, or improving operations, there is no substitute for spending time with employees, customers, and the people closest to the business.
The strongest leaders don't just review the business. They experience it firsthand.
The Best Leaders Know Where to Look
Leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about knowing where to find them.
For Jim, that means learning from founders, sharing ideas across Artisan's brands, and staying close to the people who know the business best.
Whether he's seeking a founder's perspective on a difficult decision, adapting a best practice from another brand, or spending time in the field, he continues to draw on the experience around him to make better decisions and strengthen the businesses he leads.
